A dynamic and solutions-orientated litigator, Gareth is a specialist in dispute resolution and focuses on the construction and infrastructure and renewable energy sectors. Gareth has received repeat market recognition for his work and is known for his detail-oriented approach, for partnering with his clients to achieve commercially-driven and pragmatic solutions, and for providing strategic advice that best serves client needs while navigating complex disputes.
Gareth’s expertise encompasses all facets of dispute resolution – including litigation, arbitration, adjudication, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution including mediation – with a particular focus on construction and infrastructure matters (including renewable energy projects, commercial developments, transport, major projects, high-value residential and mixed use developments, and social infrastructure projects). Gareth has assisted clients with all aspects of project delivery across the entire project lifecycle, drafting and advising on a broad range of construction-related contracts (including design and construct, construct only, engineering, procurement and construction contracts, operation and maintenance contracts, consultancy agreements, and related documentation), advising on contract administration and claims, representing clients in security of payment proceedings, and advising on or representing clients in various dispute resolution proceedings.
Prior to joining Hamilton Locke, Gareth worked at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Inc. (formerly affiliated with DLA Piper) in Johannesburg where he represented some of South Africa’s foremost petrochemical, mining and telecommunication companies and listed real estate funds, giving Gareth significant experience in environmental, mining and commodities, renewable energy and natural resources, product liability, construction, health and safety, and commercial real estate-related matters. Gareth also successfully completed his master’s degree in Global Environment and Climate Change Law with Distinction at The University of Edinburgh, giving Gareth specialist knowledge across a broad range of renewable energy and climate change-related matters.
