Douglas Bates

Senior Consultant

Douglas has a distinguished career over 35 years providing business and legal advisory services, as well as the practical experience as executive chairman of a public unlisted company. His career includes Executive Chairman of FIIG Securities Limited,18 years as a Barrister at the Queensland Bar, Solicitor with Simmons & Simmons in London and Hong Kong and with Clayton Utz in Brisbane.

Douglas takes a practical and pragmatic approach to his work based upon his extensive experience in business and law. His family has conducted cattle grazing and farming businesses in the Roma District of Queensland for six generations since the 1890s. His particular interest is providing legal and advisory services to private clients, families, and family businesses (including agribusinesses) based in Brisbane but also having a regional focus. Hamilton Locke Private offers a range of tailored legal solutions including wills, estate planning, succession, wealth transition, tax and litigation.

Douglas’ approach is that prevention is better than cure and proper planning and structuring for estates, succession and wealth transition is essential for private clients. However, should litigation arise, Douglas’ experience over many years as a Barrister ensures that his clients are well equipped.
