Nick Edwards Features in Lawyers Weekly Podcast Discussing the Skills of Successful Partners

Hamilton Locke’s Head of Restructuring and Insolvency and Partner, Nick Edwards, was recently featured in a special episode of Lawyers Weekly’s podcast, The Lawyers Weekly Show.

Nick came together with Lawyers Weekly editor Jerome Doraisamy, Commonwealth Bank national head of professional services Daniela Pasini and Mills Oakley partner Jason Symons to discuss the most pertinent qualities in partners and leaders to build and maintain a successful and sustainable leadership practice, how to develop these skills and the role of emerging technology.

In the podcast episode, Nick notes in his view some of the essential leadership skills needed to become a successful partner are communication, relationship building, decision-making, agility and resilience. He also describes the importance of leading by example, being open to growth and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

The podcast episode also highlighted the acceleration of emerging technology post-COVID-19. Nick and Jason both speak to emerging technology trends, the skills needed to understand the technology landscape and how this will shape client demands and requirements. The biggest takeaway was the increasing need for collaborative and efficient workplaces that support emerging technologies.

The Lawyers Weekly Show also highlighted the role partners and leaders play in building and maintaining diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces. Nick highlighted the need for partners to have a sense of empathy, curiosity, self-reflection and a genuine interest and understanding of their peers. He also stated that the skillset of partners is constantly evolving – the skills required of partners 15 years ago is very different to current partners and will continue to evolve.
