Hamilton Locke is pleased to have advised Calix on its partnership with Perdaman for the Zesty Green Iron Project.
The partnership is an important milestone for the Zesty project, that will adopt Calix’s patented ZESTY (Zero Emissions Steel Technology) to demonstrate the production of hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) using Western Australian iron ore at a commercially relevant scale; and enable the testing of the Zesty H-DRI product in multiple steelmaking pathways. Hydrogen is a key input to the Zesty Project and is used as a reductant in combination with electric heating to produce H-DRI from iron ore. Establishing a hydrogen supply solution at the Zesty Project’s location in Kwinana, Western Australia at suitable volumes, time frames and cost is a critical milestone required for the Zesty Project to reach a final investment decision. The partnership with Perdaman adds important capability and expertise to the Zesty Project, complementing Calix’s strategic partnership with iron ore producer Rio Tinto and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
Commenting on the heads of agreement, Partner Leigh Holder said: “We’re delighted to have supported Calix on its partnership with Perdaman. The Zesty Project highlights the significant opportunities emerging at the intersection of Australia’s resources sector and the energy transition, and we look forward to seeing the project continue to progress.”
The Hamilton Locke team was led by Leigh Holder.
