Paul has built his practice in property law with a diverse client portfolio, ranging from individual entrepreneurs to large-scale developers and listed and institutional portfolio holders. Paul is regularly called upon by his property developer and investor clients for advice regarding the acquisition of secured finance and refinancing arrangements.

A trusted advisor and considered an expert in his field, Paul has also developed a substantial private client base comprising both New Zealand and non-New Zealand domiciled clients to whom he provides trust and estate planning advice.

Paul specialises in acquisition, disposal and leasing of commercial property and residential property development of all scales, and construction contracts from both principal and contractor perspectives.

He has complemented his property practice with extensive experience advising on a wide range of investment and asset holding structures, including corporate and trust entities and limited partnerships. Paul was previously a Director at New Zealand firm, Anderson Creagh Lai, which joined Hamilton Locke in January 2023, with the establishment of Hamilton Locke New Zealand.

SELECTED REPRESENTATIONS
  • Acting for the developer of the large scale Drury West Auranga and Providence Point development in relation to a broad range of legal issues including pre-sales, subdivisions, financing, joint ventures relating to aspects of the development, participation in the Government’s KiwiBuild programme and the establishment ion of the residents’ association.
  • Acting for the developer of the large scale Rotokauri development in relation to a broad range of legal issues including due diligence and purchase of the land from multiple vendors, financing, pre-sales, subdivisions and the establishment of the residents’ association.
  • Acting for an NZX listed entity in relation to the substantial expansion of its broad portfolio of commercial properties across New Zealand, including by acquisition and leasing, and advising on construction and development matters.
  • Acting for Dilworth Trust Board in relation to all aspects of its commercial property portfolio, including acquisitions, disposals and leasing and matters relating to the Public Works Act.
  • Acting on the purchase and finance of a multi-story commercial office building in Auckland, the leasing of that building to a variety of commercial tenants, and the subsequent disposal of that building.
  • Acting for an overseas corporate fund in the establishment of limited partnerships with New Zealand domiciled limited partners for the acquisition of substantial farming assets in New Zealand, including extensive advice regarding the Overseas Investment Act 2005.
  • Acting for a major subcontractor in relation to their participation in the development of a new skyscraper apartment building (value of $40 million).
  • Acting for the developer for the registration of a unit titled-retirement village, the development and subdivision of the village, financing arrangements, deregistration of the village as a retirement village, pre-sales and construction matters.
  • Acting for mezzanine lenders for the provision of finance on both a consumer and non-consumer credit basis.
  • Acting for multiple unit owners and tenants in relation to Public Works Act claims made by owners and tenants relating to works undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency, including as instructing solicitor in an application for injunctive relief against NZTA.
