Matthew is one of Australia’s leading indirect tax specialists, with more than 26 years’ experience advising on GST and State taxes across complex transactions and disputes. His practice spans the full spectrum of indirect taxes, including GST, duties, customs and excise, payroll tax and land tax, with deep expertise in technically difficult and high value matters, particularly in property, infrastructure, investment structures and financing.
Matthew also has extensive experience advising clients on State specific issues, such as the Windfall Gains Tax (WGT) and Commercial and Industrial Property Tax (CIPT) that apply in Victoria.
He assists clients to navigate indirect tax risk at every stage – from upfront structuring through to managing Revenue Office audits and litigation at both a Federal and State level. Matthew is known for cutting through complexity and delivering clear, commercially grounded positions in areas where the law is uncertain or contested.
Matthew has a strong national profile in indirect tax and tax policy. He is a longstanding member of the Property Council’s Indirect Tax Committee and a frequent commentator in the Australian Financial Review and The Australian, where he has published more than 30 articles on GST and State taxes.
Matthew is also a Chartered Tax Adviser and a member of The Tax Institute.
