Matthew Butchard

Senior Associate

Matthew is a Senior Associate specialising in property and real estate law with a focus on commercial leasing and capital transactions involving commercial real estate assets. Throughout his career to-date, Matthew has assisted some of the world’s foremost real estate developers, fund managers and listed real estate funds.  Matthew has also gained valuable in-house experience which allows him to understand and anticipate his clients’ internal needs and processes.

Matthew’s expertise encompasses all facets of property law including retail, commercial, industrial and telecommunications leasing; capital transactions involving prominent real estate assets; residential, strata and commercial developments; and the use and development of land held on trust and administered by government entities.

Prior to joining Hamilton Locke, Matthew worked in the Real Estate team at Corrs Chambers Westgarth, as well as an in-house solicitor for the Brisbane City Council.

SELECTED REPRESENTATIONS
  • Acting for BlackRock and Federation Asset Management in its joint venture involving the acquisition and development of childcare assets across Australia valued at $600 million in projected capital expenditure.
  • Acting for Real Asset Management Group on its acquisition and disposal of retail, office and medical assets across Australia.
  • Acting for Blackstone on various and complex capital transactions, including the disposal and acquisition by unit sale of various office and retail assets in Queensland; the acquisition of various Queensland industrial and logistics assets; and the acquisition of build-to-rent projects.
  • Negotiating retail, commercial and industrial leases nationally on behalf of landlords (including 151 Property and Blackstone, Real Asset Management Group, Mirvac, Stockland and Frasers Property Australia) and tenants (including Coles, Australia Post and National Australia Bank), including negotiating major, mini-major and specialty retail leases.
  • Assisting Stockland with the development of several residential communities and industrial estates throughout Queensland, including the preparation of documents to establish community titles schemes, disclosure information and pro-forma contracts of sale to be used for each development.
  • While working in-house at the Brisbane City Council, preparing and negotiating a suite of documents with a prominent Australian hotelier and restauranteur and the State of Queensland regarding the development of a tourism and leisure precinct adjacent to, and within, the Brisbane River.
