John Frangi

John has carved out a reputation for strategically managing ground-breaking real estate transactions, often across borders. Known for his strong negotiation skills, strategic and solutions focused legal advice and commercial acumen, John is committed to delivering results for clients and building close-knit relationships of trust and collaboration.

John is a property partner specialising in property development, major tenancy leasing, sales, acquisitions and property dispute resolution. With over 20 years’ experience in private practice, as well as in-house counsel, John is experienced in mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, litigation, as well as construction, environmental and planning law. He is a highly skilled negotiator who is able to manage large and complex transactions and resolves issues at all levels within the private and public sector.

John acts for a diverse range of clients including REIT’s, government entities, retailers, developers and landlords and has acted across a range of asset classes including large format supermarket retail, industrial, telecommunications, hotels, petrol stations and liquor.

Before joining Hamilton Locke, John was the property group counsel at Woolworths Limited (Australia and New Zealand). He was also the principal of his own law firm and worked at Corrs Chambers Westgarth. He has also held contract positions with Port Authority NSW, Sydney Trains and Optus.

SELECTED REPRESENTATIONS
  • Acquisition and sale of numerous Shopping Centres with a combined value of in excess of $500 million.
  • Acted on behalf of numerous landlords in the negotiation of agreements for leases with major retail anchor tenants.
  • Acted on the negotiation of an anchor tenancy lease in respect of 42,000sqm mixed used development on behalf of private developer.
  • Acted on the creation of a new ASX listed real estate investment trust, Shopping Centres Australasia Property Group into which 69 neighbourhood and sub-regional Shopping Centres were transferred (value of $1 billion).
  • Acted on the sale to Charter Hall of a $600 million portfolio of hotels, on behalf Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (a partly owned subsidiary of Woolworths).
  • Acted on the sale, development and leaseback of a $215 million state of the art automated meat processing centre in Victoria.
  • Acted on the development of numerous Woolworths ‘Marketplace’ Shopping Centres, including Lane Cove, Double Bay, Carnes Hill, Katoomba, Mt Annan, and Vincentia.
